Iowa's caucus has been the first presidential vote in the country every four years since 1972. Iowa creates make-or-break momentum for candidates as it sets the stage for voters in other states to jump on the winning bandwagon. Iowa’s caucuses have served as an early indication of which candidates might win the nomination of their political party at that party's national convention.

Often referenced as the biggest milestone in the primary season is Super Tuesday, a single day in March of a presidential election year when the greatest number of states hold primary elections. More delegates can be won on Super Tuesday than on any other single day of the primary calendar, so candidates seeking the presidency traditionally must do well on this day to secure their party's nomination. Super Tuesday will be take place this year on March 1, 2016.

The Democratic Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States, along with the Republican Party. Tracing its heritage back to Thomas Jefferson's Democratic-Republican Party, the modern-day Democratic Party was founded around 1828, making it the world's oldest active party.

During presidential elections in the United States, it has become customary for the main candidates within a party to engage in a debate, where they most often discuss the most controversial issues of the time.

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) is a series of presidential nominating conventions held every four years since 1832 by the United States Democratic Party. The primary goal of the Democratic National Convention is to nominate and confirm a candidate for president and vice president, adopt a comprehensive party platform and unify the party.

Like the Republican National Convention, delegates from all fifty U.S. states and American territories attend the convention and cast their votes to choose the Party's presidential candidate. The DNC marks the formal end of the primary election period and the start of the general election season. The Convention will be held this year in Philadelphia, PA, July 18 – 21, 2016.
